I am convinced that one of the most daunting tasks a writer faces is the author bio. Okay, it may come in after the pitch and the dreaded query letter (aack!!), but it is definitely among the top 5 things authors hate to do. I have no problem at all going into great detail about one of my characters; their lives, loves, history. You name it - I can tell you.
But please, please, do not ask me to write about myself .
So, I did the next best thing...I had my husband write my bio. Then I edited it, tried really hard not to squish up my nose, exhale in exasperation, or ask why he hates commas (because he must hate them - he must because he never uses them). So, that was a bust.
Next, I asked, "What do people want to know about me?" My kids would tell you I'm old, and have just now figured out what to do with my life.
I prefer, "experienced in life and finding a new career path," and watch their inevitable eye rolls.
So, it's left up to me. This is my life in a nutshell:
I am the youngest of 4, and the only girl. I grew up in the Rockies and woke every morning to majestic views of Pikes Peak. I have moved extensively around the United States - I'm not kidding - 9 states. I have lived in the Midwest (a few times), the west, the southwest, the south, the west coast, and now the east coast. This is an amazing and wonderful country, and I have been blessed to experience many different parts of it.
Currently, I live outside of Annapolis, Maryland.
I went to law school, and worked in family law and criminal defense. The level of crazy led me to write mysteries and legal thrillers. Believe me when I tell you that real life is stranger than any fiction out there.
I have four kids, and they range from college graduate to middle schooler. I love them dearly. They are the reason I get up in the morning, and why I am eager to go to bed at night. Sleep is sanctuary from children. (Ha!) My husband is career Navy, and I give him credit for any success I have in this new venture I have embarked on. He is my biggest cheerleader, critic, and butt-kicker. Who could ask for more?
I am an avid (rabid?) hockey fan, and love my Detroit Red Wings. I drink way too much coffee, and my only retail addiction is buying new coffee makers and mugs. I have the best network of friends a girl could dream of having and spend a great deal of time laughing, crying, and sharing with them. And drinking wine...for there must be wine.
